Brought up in some of the remoter parts of Central Africa, I was sent away to boarding school at a very early age. Bullied unmercifully and with my parents squabbling at home, my only solace was wandering alone through the bush and spending hours with elephants and other wild life.

After a long police career, that early upbringing helped me survive a number of improbable adventures in the African wilderness and three months before my seventieth birthday, I became the first man in recorded history to walk the length of the Zambezi River.

Having spent much of my life among wild elephants, I look on them as supreme examples of gentle humanity and puts my successes as an African adventurer down to their calming influence.

‘Learning from Elephants’ is my reluctant autobiography.
